Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - Importance of Bird House Placement

I can remember building my first bird house when I was a kid, and excitedly attaching it to the side of a tree in my backyard. For months afterwards I would peek in at the bird house, but there were never any birds in it. I bought this house as a kit, so I was sure it was the correct dimensions and had the proper sized hole. Needless to say, I was very disappointed, and confused as to why no birds were inhabiting the house.

Looking into the tree that the bird house was mounted to, I could see a bird nest far up in the tree, nestled in the crook of a branch. Why would a bird make a exposed nest high up in the tree, instead of in my covered bird house, with a roof over their heads? Well, now that I'm older and wiser, I know my mistakes.

First, the nest I was looking at up in that tree was a cup nest. Birds who build cup nests don't raise their young inside a cavity-style nest (like a bird house). Second, my bird house was set at eye level. That is, the eye-level of a small kid, about four feet off the ground. Most birds won't live in a nest quite so low. Third, it was located near a gate which led into and out of the backyard, and my friends and I went in and out of that gate plenty of times almost everyday, so its no wonder birds tended to stay away from that area. Fourth, this was a tree next to our house, with a narrow space, maybe six feet wide, in between. The bird house faced our house. This didn't give the birds much of a clear flight path to their house.

So here's what I learned:

1. Build an appropriate bird house for the type of bird you want to attract.

2. Place the bird house at the appropriate height.

3. The bird house should be located in a low-traffic area.

4. Keep a clear flight path to the house.

While I might have had more success following some of the general guidelines for placement of the bird house and avoiding the pitfalls mentioned above, I still might not have received any feathered tenants. As I've learned, each species of bird has specific criteria that a bird house must meet, including proper placement of the house, if they are to select one in which to raise their young.

My first mistake, therefore, was not knowing what kind of bird the house was for. It is possible the birds the house was designed for didn't even live in the area! Assuming I had known the bird species the house was for, I should have done some research to determine the best placement of the house. I might have found that I didn't have any adequate locations to place the bird house, or I might have found a location that would be far more enticing to the birds.

Learn from my mistakes. Do your homework and, while there is never any guarantee that bird family will make its home in your bird house, you can increase the likelihood considerably.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - Attracting and Caring for Purple Martins

The interaction between man and martin dates all the way back to the Native Americans. To this day, the bubbly personality and gurgling song of the Purple Martin is cherished by those that host them. Each spring brings on an excitement that only a Purple Martin landlord can experience as they anxiously anticipate the return of their beloved martins.

Acquiring martins can be very easy or very exasperating. Following are a few ideas on what it takes to attract, keep, protect and properly care for a colony of Purple Martins.

If you are establishing a new colony, wait for the arrival of the sub-adults who tend to arrive 3-6 weeks after the mature adult martins return to established breeding sites. Wait to open your housing to prevent problems with sparrows, starling and other birds. If birds other than Purple Martins try to nest in your house, lower the house and remove the nest โ temporarily plugging the entry holes if necessary to keep them from returning.

Location of your house is very important because the martins are looking for safety and security. Raise the house the full extent of your pole (typically 10-15 feet) and keep the house at least 40 feet away from trees. Predators such as hawks find cover in trees taller than the housing that is in close proximity. Martins are aware of this and therefore, stay away from such situations. A location between 40-120 feet from your own home works well as does the center of an open spot or the edge of a pond or lake. They need very open and unobstructed flight paths. Martins actually want to be near you!

Use decoys โ Martins are social and decoys create the appearance of site activity. Adult martins use โdawnsingingโ to attract young martins to their colony site so the playing of the Dawn Song CD one or two hours before dawn is recommended but can be played any time of the day. If at first you donโt see martins, do not despair. Migration lasts through the end of June. Be diligent, and keep your house well maintained. Also, keep your house up through August. While this is too late to attract nesting pairs, this yearโs fledglings will already be scouting for next season.

In the eastern U.S. and Canada they have become totally dependent on humans to supply them housing for nesting. Studies have shown a decline of martins in some areas so this is one more reason we need to help this beautiful native bird species by supplying them โproperโ housing in which to raise their young. These birds are also protected and therefore, may not be harmed in any way. Unfortunately, many of the commercial houses are inadequate for martins. In many cases the house compartments are much too small and the materials used are much to flimsy. All housing should have a few minimum standard requirements. Briefly, here are a few starters.

All housing should be easily accessible for maintenance and nest checks. It should be easy to raise and lower vertically. Nesting compartments should be a minimum of 6โW x 6โH x10โD. Anything less is too small for martins to properly raise a brood of young and keep well out of the reach of talons of flying predators.

Housing should be painted white to reflect sun rays, keeping the house cooler. Dark colored housing is a full 10-15 degrees hotter. The heat factor is often the cause of young jumping from the nest early, seeking relief from the heat.

Do nest checks. It is very important to know whatโs going on in your colony, and they are actually fun to do. Easy access into the compartments via hinged or removable panels is imperative. The landlord needs to have easy access to clean out old nests, remove unwanted pest bird nests, and do general maintenance.

An absolute must is good ventilation. A couple of ยฝ inch holes placed high in the front and rear walls of the compartments allows for air flow and the young birds will need this especially in the southern regions.

Because of the introduction of European Starlings into this country, all housing should contain starling resistant entrance holes (SREH). The new 1 3/16โ high crescents openings have proven to effectively keep 99% of all starlings out of martin housing while at the same time, allowing martins easy access.

Check for insect pest infestation. Mites and blowflies are sometimes a major problem around martin sites. Learn how to identify them and what to do about them. A large infestation will easily kill young martin chicks. One solution for mites is ยฝ teaspoon of 5%Sevin dust sprinkled on only the nesting material. Changing out the affected nests once or twice during the season is about the best method for controlling blowfly larva. Never use spray insecticides in any kind of wild bird nests.

Martins seen to enjoy a pre-made bed of nesting material and readily accept these compartments over others that are empty. They like an ample amount of pine or wheat straw added to the nest, bringing the material right up to the bottom of the entrance hole. They have very short legs and this greatly helps in the exiting of the compartment or gourd. Sawdust or shavings of any kind are not a good base for a nest because they are not stable under foot and will soak up water, leaving the nest wet.

Purple Martins exclusively eat flying insects, taking them on the wing. Among the list of many are houseflies, moths, grasshoppers and their favorite, dragonflies. However, they will forage for food when the temperature climbs above 45 deg. They will also eat crushed egg shells and oyster shells providing them with calcium for stronger egg shells and they feed them to their young as grit to help digest their food. These can be supplied on a small raised platform set on top of a 4 or 5 foot high post.

Martins will not eat from a bird feeder nor will they drink from a birdbath. A source of good clean fresh water is a major advantage in attracting them to your home. However, if not available, they have been known to fly up to 1 or 2 miles for water.

All poles should be fitted with the proper predator guards. A simple tube guard, ten inches or more in diameter and 3 feet long mounted to the pole will stop most ground predation attempts. Occasionally accipiter hawks will discover your colony, but since they are protected, there really isnโt anything that can legally be done about them other than to be present around the colony as much as possible. This is why open flight paths are necessary around martin housing, making it more difficult for these raptors to launch their attacks.

Purple Martins are very friendly towards humans. If enough time is spent around their site, they soon begin to accept the landlord as part of the site and will soon ignore them entirely. In fact, it is well documented that the more human activity there is near a martin site, the more martins will show up. They actually seek out sites where there is abundant human activity.

Hosting a colony of Purple Martins can indeed be a joyful and rewarding hobby!

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - How To Prevent Swallows From Building Nests On Your Home And Commercial Buildings

Here come the Swallows, it must be spring.ย  Each year these beautiful birds begin to build their mud nests on our buildings, barns, homes and other areas like bridges.ย  The eave of your home provides the perfect nest building spot for swallows; providing protection form the elements and predators. ย Each year homeowners are plagued with swallow nests and the mess and debris they bring with them.

It is worth noting that in the United States, all swallows are classified as migratory insectivorous birds under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.ย  Swallows are also protected by state regulations.ย  Once the birds have begun to build their nests it is too late to get rid of them.ย  Control methods should be enacted before the swallows return.ย  This will guard against potential fines for disturbing nests or injuring the birds.

Nesting Sites:

Swallows will usually build their nests in a nice shady spot such as under the eaves of a home, bridge or overpasses, and other areas with right angles to the walls.ย ย  The swallows will choose a wall texture that is easy to "stick" their nesting material to such as wood, stucco, masonry and concrete.

Damage:

Swallows like to nest in colonies thus causing a large problem for building and homeowners.ย  Thousands of dollars of damage is caused each year from their droppings and nesting debris.ย  Not only is the droppings left behind by swallows unsightly, it can be hazardous; carrying diseases that can be transmitted to humans.ย  The nests will eventually fall to the ground where there is a chance that the bugs, fleas, ticks and mites found in them can spread to domestic animals such as dogs and cats.

How to Deter:

Exclusion is the best method of deterring pest swallows.ย  You must make it impossible for the birds to build their nests.ย  There are several methods of exclusion that can be used.

Bird Netting: A plastic netting with a 3/4 " mesh can be hung from the outer edge of the eave of the home down to the side of the wall creating a 45 degree angle.ย  This will keep the swallows from getting into the favored sheltered space under the eaves of homes and buildings to build their nests.ย  Note: Install the netting before the swallows arrive.ย  It may be left up all year or taken down after the nesting season. Bird Spikes: Installing plastic or stainless steel birds spikes at the junction where the wall meets the home keep the swallows from getting a foothold on the wall and attaching their nesting material.ย  Bird spikes are easy to install using adhesive or screws. Slippery Panel: There are products available that create a smooth surface under the eave of your home so that the swallows are not able to "stick" their nesting material to it. ย These products are generally made of a PVC plastic that is attached under the eave with adhesive. Creating a slick surface on the nesting walls will discourage the birds and they will look elsewhere to find a good nesting spot. Swallow Guard (No Nasty Nest) is anew product on the market that uses a fine clear wire attach to a clear Plexiglas base that is ready to adhere to the eaves of your home or business.ย  The swallows will not fly through this "distraction" and therefore not build their nest in areas protected by swallow guard.

NOTE: Do not use a sticky gel to deter Swallows.ย  The gel should only be use for ledges where birds land, not walls.

The best advise to keep swallows off of your home or commercial building is to do something before the swallows arrive.ย  Put up netting, bird spikes, slippery panels or other means of deterring nest building before the swallows begin to build.ย  Once the birds arrive and start building their nests, it is nearly impossible to get rid of them.ย  Some will try to hose down the nests at they are being built to no avail.ย  The swallows are tenacious birds and will just keep building and building if the spot is ideal for them. You must also be aware of the laws that protect these birds; you do not want to be fined!
