For many homeowners, a garden is their pride and joy. They till and weed and plant new seed. They enjoy the freshness and aesthetics of plants, walkways and bougainvillea draped fencing. But with bird season upon us, gardens unprotected by effective bird control measures can be vulnerable to invasion from destructive pests that eat plants and fill yards with droppings. This waste is not only unsightly but can carry any number of infectious diseases--up to 60 in fact.

Bird droppings cause unsightly stains on fencing, gazebos, patio structures and awnings. Pigeons are prime offenders, leaving messy and unattractive droppings and other waste materials. Great blue heron can eat valuable fish in your pond. Woodpeckers can destroy wood roofing shingles and turn attractive siding into "Swiss cheese." Starlings and blackbirds can eat those fruits and vegetables you nurtured all year and are so proud of. Canada geese will chew up grass and deposit nearly a pound a day (per goose) of droppings.

What to do?

Many homeowners, frustrated and angry over pest birds, may be tempted to resort to lethal bird control measures. Poisons (avicides) are not a good idea, since they can be ingested by pets and pose additional hazards to adults and children. These are also tightly controlled by the government and many species of birds are protected, so their use is extremely restricted. Firearms, even BB guns are also not a good idea, since they pose noise and harm to neighbors, pets and property. Trapping birds is one option, but this method won't stop birds from invading your garden. If your garden is attractive for roosting and nesting, they'll just keep on coming. Whereupon trapping birds will become your life's work.

People are already tired of buying ineffective pigeon repellents and other bird control installations. It is time for a revolutionary method that is going to scare all the pigeons from nesting on your roof and from landing in unwanted areas. Spikes, nets, trap, repellents are less effective - pigeons can easily find ways to avoid them all in the long run. So it is just a matter of time till they start coming back again. It doesn't take long to understand that sonic pest control devices, warning sounds and hawk models offer no danger whatsoever. Bird netting is used to exclude pest birds from areas such as rooftops, warehouses, airline hangars, overhangs, eaves of homes and other enclosed areas that pest birds are to be kept out of.ย Netting will provide 100% exclusion of pest birds and is a long-term bird control solution.ย Netting comes in several different mesh sizes ranging from ยพ" mesh for use with all types of birds, to 2" mesh to use when larger birds like pest pigeons and seagulls are a problem.

Net comes in several colors as well; white, stone and black.ย Black bird netting is usually preferred because of its natural U.V. protection and lack of discoloration due to dirt and dust.ย When installed properly, the netting will be virtually invisible, not interfering with the architectural features of a building. There are several types of netting available to exclude pest birds.ย There is knotted polyethylene netting that is considered long lasting and heavy duty.ย You would use this type where you want a permanent solution to your bird control issues.ย Heavy-duty bird netting is usually manufactured using U.V. treated twine providing long life.ย Strength of these nets can be greater than 40 lbs. burst.ย They will also have a high melting point and flame resistant.ย This type of netting is ideal for use in warehouses, airplane hangars, canopies, overhangs and other large areas where pest birds are to be excluded.

Bird control spikes, also known as needle spikes or anti-roosting spikes are devices consisting of long, needle-like spikes used to control pest birds.ย The needles or spikes are usually all plastic or a plastic base with stainless steel spikes.ย They are harmless to pest birds, the spikes are not sharp, but create an unsuitable landing area for the birds so they move on to a more hospitable site.ย Bird spikes are designed to keep pest pigeons and larger birds off of building ledges, signs, parapet walls and other flat surfaces that pest birds like to roost and nest on.

Not only are these problems unsightly; pest birds and their feces can spread 60 plus transmittable diseases. Safety, sanitation and health hazards caused by bird droppings can pose serious liability risks, and left untreated, can lead to accidents and lawsuits. Bird feces, bird nests and debris can also create a bad public image with tenants and patrons. Bird spikes are made in one-foot or two-foot lengths, with different widths.ย The widths of the spikes are usually 3", 5" and 8".ย The width of the bird spike used is determined by the area to be covered.ย It is best if the entire surface area that birds are landing on is covered with the spikes.ย Installation is often as easy as applying adhesive or screwing them.

Your house is the biggest investment you are ever likely to make so it seems obvious that you want to keep it a state of good repair, after all if it's falling down you probably wouldn't sell it or if you did you would not get its true value.

Next time your in your garden take a look up to your roofline, that's the part that has the gutter attached to it, is it looking past its best, is the gutter sagging or has it come away from itself?, have you noticed birds nesting in the roof, these are just some of the things that could mean your roofline needs to be looked at before it gets any worse.

Birds nesting in between the rafters cause the truss ends to rot, this is from the birds bringing wet grass back to build their nests, the body heat of the birds as they nest and also from rainwater getting behind the fascia boards (the birds make holes in the felt). Rotten wood needs to be removed, it will not get any better.

Some people will opt to have the existing wood covered over, this is fine as long as the original wood is in good condition ie. absolutely no rot whatsoever, however if there is the smallest amount of rot etc. it must be removed no questions. There really is very little difference in price for having full replacement maybe a couple of hundred pounds.

For full removal the first row of tiles should be removed, approx 6 inches of roofing felt should be cut away, this allows the fitters access to the rear of the fascia board which in turn makes it easier to remove, once the gutter and fascia has been removed the soffit can be inspected, in most cases the soffit could well be asbestos in which case it can be left in place, it does not rot and is expensive to dispose of, if the soffit is wood it can be removed if needed, some fitters leave the existing wooden soffit in place and cover over it with the new soffit, this is purely down to the fitter and does not compromise the work. sprockets should now be fitted to the truss ends, these are basically wooden batons screwed in to the truss ends that the new nails that hold the fascia on are nailed into, this is to stop any new nails being knocked into existing nail holes, you do not get a solid hold and the new fascia board may move a little.

Once the fascia board has been attached, it is time for the gutter to be fitted, this come in either round, square or ogee, round or square are generally fitted, ogee is quite expensive, the gutter normally comes in 3 different colours, Black, White or Brown, there should be no difference in the price for colours or style.

Now the gutter has been fitted it is time for the venting system and bird combs (to stop birds re-nesting), this basically sits on top of the fascia board and slips under the existing felt, this ensures that any rainwater that gets between the tiles actually runs down the felt into the gutter and does not fall behind the fascia, the venting system allows air to circulate the loft space and stops condensation forming. Please note: depending on the type of tiles you have birds combs may not be needed.

It now just leaves the downpies to be fitted, if your home has gables with fascia and soffit, they be replaced in much the same way as the fascia and soffit (with gutter) although there will not be any need to remove tiles, felt etc.

All of this can be carried out for a relatively small amount of money, an average sized house with 20 metres of fascia, soffit and gutter and 2 gables with 10 metres of fascia and soffit should not come to anymore that ยฃ1500.

If you have a coloured fascia or a woodgrain effect be prepared to pay almost double the price for white, unfortunately coloured and woodgrain are extremely expensive so beware.

Any decent fitting company should remove all rubbish from you property, they should leave your property clean and tidy.
